What are the side effects of Lactobacillus Casei supplements?
Lactobacillus Casei supplements are safe for most people, but side effects such as gas and bloating can occur in some cases. Probiotics should be taken with caution if you have:
- Weak immune system: Given L. Casei is a live bacteria that can grow at a high rate in people with a weak immune system. People undergoing organ transplants, or receiving treatment for HIV/ AIDS generally have weak immunity. Such people should consult with their physician before taking any probiotics.
- Digestive surgery: People who have undergone a digestive procedure or colonoscopy must speak with their physician before taking probiotics. Probiotics can increase the chances of infection after surgery or invasive therapy.
- People taking antibiotics: Simultaneous administration of antibiotics can decrease the effectiveness of probiotics.
Does Lactobacillus Casei affect histamine?
Lactobacillus Casei can affect histamine levels and should be avoided in case of histamine intolerance. Lactobacillus Casei can increase the levels of histamine or produce histamine in the body.

Pay close attention to the label of ingredients, because a different species of Lactobacillus known as Lactobacillus Paracasei does not affect histamine levels, and L. Casei and L. Paracasei are not the same.

Lactobacillus Casei is effective for diverticulitis as it prevents the recurrence of the condition. A year-long clinical trial shows that patients taking L.Casei for a year showed a decrease in diverticulitis symptoms and improvements in gastrointestinal symptoms. The study found that supplementation with the probiotic resulted in a 50% decrease in diverticulitis symptoms.
A study performed on 90 patients for 12 months found that L.casei was effective in preventing the recurrence of symptomatic uncomplicated diverticular disease of the colon. The study also concurrently tested a drug alone, drug and probiotic combination for the treatment of the condition. The study found that the combination of the drug and probiotics was effective for the treatment of diverticulitis.

Lactobacillus Casei LC 11 is the synonym of Lactobacillus Casei. Both of the terms are used interchangeably by manufacturers.

- It restores the normal vaginal flora after antibiotic treatment of bacterial vaginosis. A study performed on 190 women demonstrated that external application of L. Casei Rhamnosus significantly improved the vaginal flora of the treatment group as compared to the control group.
- Antibacterial property: A laboratory study shows that L. Casei Rhamnosus inhibited the growth of 9 pathogenic bacteria. The study found no viable colonies of pathogens at the end of the study and concluded that the probiotic can be used to prevent the colonization of harmful pathogens in the gastrointestinal tract.
- Effectivity on E.Coli: A study showed that L. Casei Rhamnosus has intestinal adhesive properties and inhibits the adhesion of three other pathogens including E.Coli.
Which foods contain Lactobacillus Casei?
The following are some foods containing Lactobacillus Casei:
- Yogurt: fermented yogurt contains Lactobacillus Casei and other species of Lactobacilli.
- Fermented plant foods: fermented plant food items such as sauerkraut and kimchi contain L.Casei.
- Fermented food: similar to yogurt.
- Cheese: Grana Padano (GP) and Parmigiano Reggiano (PR), and hard, ripened cheese.
- Raw Milk may contain L. Casei
- Fermented milk products
- Kefir: It contains several strains of lactobacilli
