What are the side effects of Lactobacillus Fermentum supplements?

Lactobacillus Fermentum may have some minor side effects such as gas and bloating. It is considered safe for most people and is declared “Generally Regarded As Safe (GRAS)” by USFDA. L. Fermentum is also safe when taken by children and infants.

However, people with the following conditions should consult their physician before taking L. Fermentum:

  • Weak immunity: People who have weak or compromised immunity, in case of organ transplant, HIV/ AIDS should exercise caution while taking probiotics. The use of probiotics in these conditions can lead to the presence of bacteria in the bloodstream, a condition known as bacteremia.
  • Pro-inflammatory response: A specific strain of L.Fermentum known as AGR1487 may cause a pro-inflammatory response. Check the list of ingredients and the strain of probiotics used in the product.
  • Antibiotics: Avoid taking probiotics along with antibiotics. The concurrent use of antibiotics can decrease the effectiveness of probiotics.

Does Lactobacillus Fermentum help weight loss?

Lactobacillus Fermentum may help with weight loss because it modifies the gut microflora. The researchers propose that probiotic-led changes in gut microflora can lead to altered energy metabolism and body composition.

Researchers conducted a study on 28 healthy overweight individuals aged between 18-60 years. The subjects consumed either a control yogurt or yogurt with a probiotic. The study was conducted for a total of 43 days, at the end of the study researchers found a change in body composition and fat loss after consuming the probiotic yogurt.

Another study shows that L.Fermentum increases energy expenditure and protects against diet-induced obesity. 


What is Lactobacillus Fermentum 57a?

Lactobacillus Fermentum 57a is one of the probiotics that researchers have claimed to be beneficial in improving and restoring vaginal flora.

In a clinical trial containing 376 women, half of the women were given a placebo and the other half were given a vaginal capsule containing Lactobacillus Fermentum 57a and other two probiotics for 7 days. Researchers collected vaginal swabs of all the participants 4 times a day. At the end of the trial, the researchers found that the women taking probiotic supplements showed higher concentrations of lactobacilli in vaginal flora than the placebo group. The trial concluded that the probiotic product can restore vaginal flora.

Studies also claim that the consumption of probiotics can help improve overall vaginal health. 


What is Lactobacillus Fermentum LC40?

Lactobacillus Fermentum LC40 is a strain of Lactobacilli that is naturally found in breastmilk and supports breast health. The strain LC40 has been isolated and patented by a Spanish company. 

The company claims that the strain helps to reduce breast pain and inflammation during breastfeeding and lactation. It further claims that the L.Fermentum LC40 can modulate the immune system, and reduces the risk of infection and inflammation. 

In a clinical trial, the Lactobacillus Fermentum LC40 was found to be more effective in decreasing breast infection and inflammation than an antibiotic. The strain was also effective in reducing breast pain during breastfeeding.
